Webquest
In my effective instruction class a lot of stress was put on the idea of teachers pushing their students to have higher level thinking and how to achieve that with each student. This technology, a webquest, does a great job of pushing students. For this assignment, I had to design an interactive webquest that achieved higher level thinking while enforcing the curriculum learning. This was a very detailed project that required many steps for the students. The idea is that a webquest can replace a basic report just reporting facts. My webquest is titled “Becoming a geologist” and it requires my students to engage in activities that a real geologist would do. I want my kids to take the knowledge they learned in class, the facts, and relate them to a real life situation. So, with the tools they learned in class, my students are required to write a short paper on how to identify the various types of rocks and explain their characteristics. After completing that, they are required to label diagrams that represent different geologic cross sections. Based on the information they learned in class they should be able to tell me what happened first and continue through the entire section. The third task required my students to pair up and go on a hunt for various rocks around town. They were to find the rocks, chart characteristics about them, identify them, and do a PowerPoint presentation. Finally, the last task is a fun task where went on a field trip to a real mine and tour the facilities. They were to write another essay explaining why they thought it was important to understand rocks and geologic age. All the information on how to complete the assignment was provided on a webquest where the students could navigate through themselves. This is such a fun way to incorporate technology in the classroom and engage each student. I will definitely be using this in my classroom.
The only challenging part of this assignment was coming up with the best ways to challenge my students with higher level thinking. I am sure once I am in the classroom this issue will be resolved quickly. Designing a webquest is extremely easy and fun. This technology met the ISTE-Nets-T 2, 2a, 2d, and 3d requirements.
